Porch and natural stone patio

A water management issue in the backyard of this lovely Roland Park home was the inspiration for this project designed by architect Laurie Stubb and Greenbuilders for Allen Hance, Director of the Chesapeake Bay Trust, and his wife Amanda Anderson, Chair of the English Department at Johns Hopkins University. The design conceals and includes drains at the top of the terrace which empty into the generous vegetated swale between yard and street. The terrace itself is completely water permeable, set in stone dust instead of concrete. Notice the slabs of stone (called steppers) instead of formal stairs; slices of the same stone form the foundation for the porch, creating visual continuity. Deck and porch floor are sustainably harvested ipe, requiring no chemical treatment.

Tags (What's a Tag?)

Tags are key words that are added by a service provider or homeowner when they upload a photo. They may describe anything in the photo the uploader thinks is particularly notable: a feature, a paint color, a material used, anything. We encourage you to add tags wherever something in the image has caught your eye. If you don't see many results under tags yet, you will as the site grows. Keep tagging!
